Facebook's Meta plans to build a $1B data center for Metaverse

The parent company of Facebook, Meta, unveils plans to build a $1.1 billion new data center in Spain to help make the foundation of its Metaverse. In addition, the company also plans to hire 2,000 staff in the area to push development.

Javier Olivan, the vice president of cross-Meta products and infrastructure, said in a statement that as the company prepares to help build the Metaverse, they're putting Spain at the center of their plans.

The $1.1 billion data center campus is planned to be built in the Toledo region of Spain. The company stated that the data center should be built by 2023. However, it's not expected to be fully operational until 2029. Meta also said that the company has plans to double its office space in Madrid. Thus it will recruit up to 2,000 people in Spain over the next five years. Madrid will be home to the world's first Meta Lab as well. The Meta Lab is a flexible workspace for Meta remote workers with space for local startups and technology entrepreneurs.

Over the past few years, Meta has been one of the four largest spenders on building and equipping hyper-scale data centers across the globe along with Microsoft, Google, and Amazon Web Services.
