NFTs are coming to Instagram, confirms Mark Zuckerberg

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed at SXSW that NFTs are arriving on Instagram in the near future.

Although he didn't give out any details on how this would take place, he suggested that users would be able to show off their existing non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, as well as mint new ones on the photo-sharing platform. Zuckerberg stated, "I'm not ready to kind of announce exactly what that's going to be today. But over the next several months, the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment."

Instagram wouldn't be the first social media platform to include the popular digital assets. In January, Twitter entered the world of NFTs by allowing Twitter Blue subscribers to use their NFTs as profile pictures.

Aside from incorporating NFTs on Instagram, Zuckerberg also explained that NFTs could one day play a part in Meta's vision of the metaverse. "I would hope that you know, the clothing that your avatar is wearing in the metaverse, you know, can be basically minted as an NFT, and you can take it between your different places," he said. However, he mentioned that there are technical issues that the company needs to address before the process is seamless.

Zuckerberg also touched on a variety of issues that the metaverse is facing, such as being conscious that the tech that is currently being built will constantly improve over time. He also noted that he believes the metaverse will be an essential part of what Meta does.
